at the workplace

I don't usually say much about my job. Mostly because of the whole privacy/confidentiality/attorney-client privilege thing.... But really, any kind of secretarial job or admin assistant position have various similarities. And today, it just so happens that these two things are annoying me immensely. Oh, there are lots of others, but these two are at the top of the list right now.

1. Ginormous staples: The big 10 gauge wire ones, like ones that could anchor farm fence to a wooden post. The ones that take every amount of upper body strength to pull down the giant lever on the stapler that makes you feel like you're spinnig the big wheel on The Price is Right. But what I hate most about them? Is taking them out. In this line of work, every piece of paper you touch inevitably has to be copied and sent to someone else at some point or another. So when I get an entire ream of paper bound with one (or more) of those big flippin staples and I have to use the Jaws of Life to get it out, to say that it annoys me is putting it mildly. It should be mandatory office code that we all use a red Swingline like Milton's. If you can't staple your papers with Milton's stapler, then USE A CLIP.

2. Various forms of this whole conversation:

"Can I speak to Mr. Attorney?"

"He's on his line, would you like his voicemail?"

"Do you know when he'll be off the phone?"

Seriously? Really?! No. No, I do not know how long the conversation he is currently having with another caller will last. I have no clue what they're talking about. I do not know what thought processes they are having and what verbage they intend to use to communicate those thought processes. How could I possibly know how long he will be on the phone.

But if you'll hang on though, I'll consult my Magic 8 Ball.

3. And lastly, the rigid paperclips:

HATE them. They should be banned.

What bugs you about your job???

I work with attorneys too. I have the same gripe about people who think we magically know when the attorney will be OFF the phone.

And those huge staples? OMG I have inflicted bloddy wounds trying to get those things out. I'm not kidding!!

Oh, but let me tell you about the most ball-sy comment someone made to me. We were discussing her potential case. Which had ZERO potential. I was referring her out to someone else. She asked for legal advice. I cannot give legal advice. I told her as much. I said "I'm not an attorney, I am a paralegal and we cannot give out legal advice." Her response?

"Well can you tell me what it is that paralegals even DO then?"

Oh honey...............don't EV-EN go there.

Have you seen my staple (enter lisp in appropriate parts :-))
Man I love that movie.

What irritates me most are the people that call and demand things. First of all asking nicely will get you so much more. What I do for you is a service and I like to be treated like a human being. You know, do unto others as you would have them do to you!!!! Geez!!!!

Oh she did! I did not take her case.

Oh, and I realize that I spelled "bloody" wrong. I just want to put that on the record so people don't think I'm a complete moron.

I'm going to FedEx you a staple remover. Or just put it in my purse and give it to you the next time I see you. I didn't believe this thing would actually work, but it does.

As for what bugs me at my job: not having enough time for the internet. Oh, and the people who make 3x my salary, but have nothing to do.

What bothers me about my job? Ummmm, let's see....KIDS!

I love the eight ball! And I agree whole-heartedly about staples.

An ongoing complaint of mine is the oonstant concern about e-mail tone. I can't just send someone an e-mail telling them to do something (even if it's their job) - I have to throw in all of these, "if you don't mind - if you have a minute - I know you're really busy right now - I really appreciate your help..." It takes longer for me to compose the e-mail than it takes the person I'm e-mailing to complete the task. Sheesh! But I'm middle management - and that's how it goes. We may be "the boss" but we're not high level enough to "act" like it.

oh i love paperclips lins, just not the little rigid ones! they have to be smooth!!

i'm a big fan of the big ones, not so much the small ones. and i dont really care for the colored ones either.

kate - i have been accused of having a 'tone' in an email at my last job. only it was exactly the tone i was going for, so, mission accomplished!

Well, let me see. Probably the thing I hate the most is coming downstairs every morning to open the door to let Uncle Trixie and Mega Man in. Oh, yes I did!!!!

JK Uncle Trixie. Can I have that raise now?

Oh yeah I HATE colored paperclips. I don't like the feel of them. Weird huh!

And MISHEL...you better watch it or you'll find yourself in line at the unemployment office. :)

oh, my where do I begin??? I would need my own blog to list EVERYTHING!!!! lol I don't like giving out my name to the entire world so when someone says "and what is your name?" I say this is the receptionist. Here is a response I got from that comment a few weeks ago. "so your mother looked into the cradle and said Hello, receptionist" smart@ss.....I'm sure the ones out there in Marsha blogland that know me can imagine what I REALLY wanted to reply with. BUT I was nice and said my name (but using that tone.) what a jerk!

Being expected to know everything about everything at a new job. It takes months and months!

I hate those staples too! I work in a hospital and when docs write orders, they literally ALWAYS without exception have to be faxed, but they still use those stupid staples that are probably hurricane resistant.
As for other annoyances, seriously, neither of us have time.

They say change is good, but is it truly good when it annoys the hell out of you. You've learned one way that they want you to be and the next thing you know, you're learning something else new all together. Pain!

You are HI-larious. And if I tell you what 'things' annoy me about my job, I'll have to delete my post today. So my lips are sealed, sister.

But there are 'things' nevertheless.

I gave you an award over at my place;)

Hilarious post! I heart Milton!! And I hate the big staplers! I was just using one yesterday and every time I slammed down, the staple got stuck!!!!! And then I had to pry out the bad one and start all over!

Oh and another thing, I just said to my cube neighbor yesterday, if one more person asks me "How long do you think he will be on the call?" WHAT???? Geez, I forgot to set my timer! That has to be one of the dumbest questions EVA!!! Oh and don't even get me started with people who call and before they ask for who they want, they go into the big time detail on why they are calling..I don't care!

I don't think I can sleep now...

i HATE those staplers. and i hate trying to get them out. i always hurt myself.

and hello? uh, NO YOU CANNOT HOLD. i hate that crap!! it's like no i don't know how long he'll be on, and no you cant hold for him bc it's a conference call. i just told you that. it will be a . long. call. idiots. or never wanting voicemail, instead telling me the exact. same. message. they'd leave on a vm. and then i have to write it down and deliver it to the person and hello, when do i have time for this???

i hate the ridged paperclips. the sound they make when they come off of paper freaks me out!
